700 islands, swimming pigs, the world's clearest water, and Junkanoo drums at dawn.
The Bahamas is a sprawling archipelago of 700+ islands and 2,400 cays stretching from just east of Florida down toward Cuba and the Turks and Caicos. Politically and culturally distinct from the rest of the Caribbean — it lies in the Atlantic, not the Caribbean Sea — the Bahamas runs the gamut from the high-density Nassau/Paradise Island cruise-and-resort core, to development-heavy Grand Bahama, to the dozens of "Out Islands" (Eleuthera, the Exumas, Andros, the Abacos, Bimini, Cat Island) where most visitors don't go.
Nassau and Paradise Island host Atlantis, Baha Mar, and most cruise traffic. The Exumas (swimming pigs at Big Major Cay) and Eleuthera (pink-sand Harbour Island) are the prettier, more boutique destinations. The Bahamas was hit catastrophically by Hurricane Dorian in 2019 (Grand Bahama and the Abacos took the worst of it); recovery has been uneven and the Abacos rebuild is still in progress.

Mid-December–April
Peak dry season. May and June are warm and excellent value. June–November is hurricane season; the Bahamas sits in the heart of the corridor and the August–October stretch carries the highest risk.
Main airport
NAS — Lynden Pindling International (Nassau)
Typical direct flights from
Atlantis Paradise Island, the Exumas (swimming pigs at Big Major Cay and the Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park), Harbour Island's pink-sand beach, Andros bonefishing, Bimini and Hemingway's Compleat Angler legacy, and being the closest tropical destination to the US East Coast (35-minute flight from Miami).
A rental car ($45–70/day; drive on the left) is the standard on Nassau, Grand Bahama, and the larger Out Islands. Inter-island travel is by Bahamasair (the national carrier), small charters, or the mail boat. Many Out Islands are most easily reached by private charter or scheduled hop from NAS.
Yes — upper-mid to high tier. Nassau and Paradise Island are pricier than most Caribbean destinations — Atlantis rooms start at $400–700/night. Out Islands like Eleuthera and the Exumas can run even higher per night since inventory is small. Mid-range trips average $300–500/day per couple.
Mid-December through April for dry season and peak weather. June–November is hurricane season; the Bahamas sits in the heart of the corridor and the August–October stretch is the riskiest in the wider region. Hurricane Dorian (2019) devastated the Abacos and Grand Bahama.
Four to five days for a Nassau/Paradise Island trip. Seven to ten days if you want to add an Out Island like Eleuthera, Exuma, or the Abacos. The country is too spread out to see broadly in a week, and inter-island flights eat travel days.
Mostly — resort areas (Paradise Island, Cable Beach, Out Islands) are well-monitored and very safe. Downtown Nassau outside the Bay Street tourist zone and the "Over-the-Hill" neighborhoods have higher crime rates and warrant caution after dark. The US State Department has issued specific advisories for parts of Nassau.
Atlantis Paradise Island, swimming pigs at Big Major Cay (Exumas), pink-sand Harbour Island, Andros bonefishing, the Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park (the first marine park in the Caribbean), Junkanoo (the spectacular New Year's Day street festival), and proximity to Florida.
In Nassau, optional — taxis and resort shuttles cover most needs. On Eleuthera, Exuma, the Abacos, and other Out Islands, a rental ($45–70/day) is essentially required since distances are long and transit is minimal. Some Out Islands are small enough that a golf cart works.
