US Virgin Islands Travel Guide 2026: Cost, Best Time to Visit & Tips

No passport, left-hand driving, and the best national park beaches in America.

The US Virgin Islands consist of three main islands — St. Thomas, St. John, and St. Croix — plus dozens of small cays. The territory was bought from Denmark in 1917; you still see Danish street names in Charlotte Amalie and Christiansted. Like Puerto Rico, no passport is required for Americans, and the US dollar, cellular networks, and postal service are all standard.

St. Thomas is the busy cruise port and shopping hub (Charlotte Amalie hosts more cruise calls than almost any other Caribbean port). St. John is two-thirds national park (Virgin Islands National Park) and has the best-protected beaches in the territory — Trunk Bay and Cinnamon Bay are postcard standards. St. Croix is the largest, quieter, and has a stronger food and rum scene anchored by Cruzan and Captain Morgan distilleries.

What US Virgin Islands is known for

Trunk Bay and Cinnamon Bay on St. John, Magens Bay on St. Thomas, Virgin Islands National Park, Cruzan Rum, Charlotte Amalie's Danish colonial core, Buck Island Reef National Monument off St. Croix, and Honeymoon Beach on Water Island. The territory is the most accessible US-administered tropical destination.

Getting around

On St. Thomas, taxis (open-air "safari" buses) run set routes and rentals ($45–70/day, drive on the left) are common. On St. John, rentals (often Jeeps for the steep terrain) are standard. Inter-island ferries (Red Hook to Cruz Bay) run frequently. St. Croix is large enough that a rental is essentially required.

Frequently asked questions

Is the US Virgin Islands expensive?+

Yes — upper-mid to high tier. The USVI is pricier than Puerto Rico and on par with the BVI in many places. Mid-range trips run $300–450/day. St. John is the priciest island; St. Croix is the most affordable. Grocery and restaurant prices are 30%+ above US mainland averages.

What is the best time to visit the US Virgin Islands?+

December through April for dry weather and low hurricane risk. May and June are good-value shoulder months. June–November is hurricane season; the USVI took severe Irma/Maria damage in 2017 but has fully rebuilt. Carnival on St. Thomas peaks in late April/early May.

How many days do you need in the US Virgin Islands?+

Five to seven days. A common split is 2 nights on St. Thomas, 3 on St. John for the national park beaches, and 2 on St. Croix if you want to add a quieter island. For St. John alone, 4–5 days is plenty. The inter-island ferries make multi-island stays straightforward.

Is the US Virgin Islands safe for tourists?+

Yes in beach and resort areas. Charlotte Amalie (St. Thomas) has higher street crime in some neighborhoods after dark; cruise visitors should stick to the waterfront and main shopping streets. St. John is very low-crime due to its small population. Frederiksted on St. Croix warrants standard urban precautions.

What is the US Virgin Islands known for?+

Trunk Bay and Cinnamon Bay (St. John), Virgin Islands National Park, Magens Bay (St. Thomas), Danish colonial architecture in Charlotte Amalie and Christiansted, Cruzan Rum, Buck Island Reef, and being a US territory accessible without a passport. The Charlotte Amalie waterfront is one of the busiest cruise stops in the world.

Do you need a car in the US Virgin Islands?+

Useful on all three islands. On St. John, a Jeep or 4x4 is recommended for the steep north-shore roads. On St. Thomas, taxis cover most needs but a rental adds flexibility. On St. Croix, a car is essentially required given the island's size. Driving is on the left, which surprises some US visitors.
