The carnival capital of the Caribbean โ soca, doubles, and the world's biggest street party.
Trinidad & Tobago is a two-island republic at the very southern edge of the Caribbean, just off the coast of Venezuela. The two islands are very different: Trinidad is large, oil-rich, urban, and culturally dense โ the birthplace of calypso, soca, steelpan, and Carnival as the rest of the Caribbean knows it. Tobago, 20 miles northeast, is small, quiet, and beach-oriented in the more traditional Caribbean mode.
Trinidad's main draw is Carnival (the two days before Ash Wednesday) โ widely considered the model for Carnival traditions across the western hemisphere. Outside Carnival, Trinidad has a small but committed tourism industry around bird-watching at the Asa Wright Nature Centre, the Caroni Swamp scarlet ibis colony, and a deep food culture (doubles, roti, bake-and-shark). Tobago handles most beach-and-resort tourism.

JanuaryโMay
Dry season. Carnival weekend (the two days before Ash Wednesday, usually February) is the cultural peak. T&T sits below the main hurricane belt, so storm risk is minimal year-round.

Typical direct flights from
Carnival (the model for Caribbean Carnival traditions), calypso, soca, steelpan (invented in Trinidad), the Asa Wright Nature Centre, scarlet ibis at Caroni Swamp, Maracas Beach bake-and-shark, leatherback turtle nesting on the north coast, and Tobago's Pigeon Point and Buccoo Reef.
In Trinidad, a rental car ($35โ55/day) is essential โ public transit is sparse and Port of Spain has serious traffic. In Tobago, the island is small enough to manage on taxis or a rental ($35โ50/day). Drive on the left. Inter-island flights run multiple times daily for around $60โ100 return.
Lower-mid tier. Trinidad is much cheaper than the resort islands โ locals eat for $5โ10 per meal, and mid-range hotels in Port of Spain run $80โ150/night. Tobago is pricier but still moderate. Carnival week is the exception โ accommodation prices in Trinidad triple or quadruple in the days around the parade.
January through May for the dry season. Carnival (the two days before Ash Wednesday, typically February) is the unmissable cultural event โ book accommodation a year ahead. T&T sits below the main hurricane belt, so storm risk is low year-round and the rainy season (JuneโDecember) is workable.
Seven to ten days to do both islands justice. For Trinidad alone, 4โ5 days covers Carnival or the cultural-and-nature highlights. Tobago is a 3โ4 day beach add-on with a short inter-island flight. Carnival visitors often need 7โ10 days for fete events, costume fittings, and the parade itself.
Mixed. Tobago is generally very safe. Trinidad has higher crime in specific Port of Spain neighborhoods โ Laventille, Beetham, and parts of east Port of Spain should be avoided. Tourist zones (Maraval, St. Ann's, west coast) are fine with standard precautions. The US, UK, and Canada maintain heightened advisories specific to certain areas.
Carnival, calypso, soca, steelpan (invented here), the Asa Wright Nature Centre, scarlet ibis at Caroni Swamp, oil and gas wealth, and a uniquely diverse Indo-Afro-Caribbean culture. Tobago is known for Pigeon Point, Buccoo Reef snorkeling, and the Sunday-school weekly street fete at Buccoo.
In Trinidad, yes โ distances are long and public transit is limited. In Tobago, optional โ the island is small enough that taxis and maxi-taxis (shared vans) cover most needs, but a rental adds flexibility for $35โ50/day. Driving is on the left and Port of Spain traffic is notoriously bad.
