Curaçao Travel Guide 2026: Cost, Best Time to Visit & Tips

Dutch colonial color, 35 hidden beaches, and a dive scene that rivals Bonaire.

Curaçao is the "C" of the ABC Islands — the largest of the three, with about 160,000 people, and the cultural anchor. It sits 40 miles north of Venezuela and is desert-dry, outside the hurricane belt, and built on Dutch colonial architecture (the pastel waterfront of Willemstad is a UNESCO World Heritage site). Papiamentu — a Portuguese/Spanish/Dutch/African creole — is the working language alongside Dutch, English, and Spanish.

The dive industry is the island's biggest tourism draw: the reef is right offshore from most resorts, the water is calm thanks to the island's leeward position, and night diving on the Sunset Waters reef is legendary. The island also has a small but serious food scene around Willemstad and a developed expat and digital-nomad community.

What Curaçao is known for

Diving (especially Mushroom Forest and the Tugboat wreck), the UNESCO-listed Punda and Otrobanda districts of Willemstad, the floating pendant-shaped Queen Emma Bridge, Curaçao liqueur (made from the bitter Laraha orange), and Christoffel National Park. The pastel waterfront is one of the most photographed in the Caribbean.

Getting around

A rental car ($35–55/day; drive on the right) is the standard. Buses (Konvoi minivans and Autobus Bedrijf Curaçao) cover the main routes cheaply. The island is small at 171 square miles and driving is easy with light traffic outside Willemstad.

Frequently asked questions

Is Curaçao expensive?+

Mid-tier — comparable to Aruba but a notch cheaper. Budget travel runs $100–140/day; mid-range trips $200–300/day. The dive industry keeps activity prices reasonable. The high-end is anchored by Baoase, Sandals Royal Curaçao, and Avila Beach Hotel at $700–1,200/night. Imported groceries are pricey but local food is reasonable.

What is the best time to visit Curaçao?+

Effectively year-round. The island is outside the hurricane belt with minimal storm risk, rainfall is low and even, and temperatures sit at 78–88°F most months. December through April is the busiest tourist window. September–November sees the most rain but it's still very dry by Caribbean standards.

How many days do you need in Curaçao?+

Five to seven days is a comfortable stay: 2–3 days for diving and snorkeling, 1–2 in Willemstad, and 1–2 for Christoffel Park and the wild northwest coast (Shete Boka, Westpunt). Divers often stay 10+ days to clock more tanks and dive less-traveled sites.

Is Curaçao safe for tourists?+

Yes — one of the safer Caribbean islands. Petty theft from rental cars and on unattended beaches is the most common issue. Otrobanda after dark and a few specific neighborhoods warrant standard urban precautions. Violent crime against tourists is rare.

What is Curaçao known for?+

Diving, UNESCO-listed Willemstad, Curaçao liqueur, Papiamentu language, the Queen Emma swing bridge, Mushroom Forest reef, and the Tugboat wreck. It is the largest and most cosmopolitan of the ABC islands and one of the more linguistically interesting Caribbean countries.

Do you need a car in Curaçao?+

Yes, recommended. Most dive sites, beaches, and Christoffel Park are far from Willemstad and not well-served by transit. Rentals are inexpensive ($35–55/day) and driving is easy. The roads to the more remote north and west beaches are unpaved in places — a small SUV is useful.
