One of the most confusing parts of Caribbean travel planning is currency. Unlike Europe (one currency, done), the Caribbean uses at least 12 different currencies across 23 major destinations. Some accept USD everywhere. Others don't. This guide breaks it all down.
Islands That Use USD
The simplest option for American travelers. No exchange rate, no conversion fees, no confusion.
- Puerto Rico — U.S. territory, full USD economy
- US Virgin Islands — U.S. territory, full USD economy
- British Virgin Islands — Officially uses USD despite being British
- Bonaire — Adopted USD in 2011
- Turks & Caicos — USD is the official currency
Eastern Caribbean Dollar (XCD) Islands
The XCD is shared by eight island nations and pegged to the USD at approximately 2.70 XCD = 1 USD. This rate has been stable for decades, making budgeting straightforward. USD is widely accepted on all these islands, though you'll often get change in XCD.
- Anguilla
- Antigua & Barbuda
- Dominica
- Grenada
- St. Kitts & Nevis
- Saint Lucia
- St. Vincent & the Grenadines
Euro (EUR) Islands
The French Caribbean islands use the Euro, which typically means higher prices for USD travelers. These islands are departments of France, so European pricing applies.
Islands With Their Own Currency
Several islands maintain their own national currency. Most accept USD to some degree, but you'll get better rates using local currency.
| Island | Currency | Code | USD Accepted? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aruba | Aruban Florin | AWG | Yes, widely |
| Curaçao | Netherlands Antillean Guilder | ANG | Yes |
| Bahamas | Bahamian Dollar | BSD | Yes (1:1 peg) |
| Barbados | Barbadian Dollar | BBD | Yes |
| Jamaica | Jamaican Dollar | JMD | Yes, in tourist areas |
| Dominican Republic | Dominican Peso | DOP | Yes, in tourist areas |
| Haiti | Haitian Gourde | HTG | Yes |
| Trinidad & Tobago | TT Dollar | TTD | In some areas |
| Cayman Islands | Cayman Dollar | KYD | Yes |
Practical Money Tips
- Use a no-foreign-transaction-fee card. Chase Sapphire, Capital One Venture, or similar. This saves 3% on every purchase abroad.
- Withdraw local currency from ATMs when you arrive. You'll get better rates than airport exchange counters.
- Decline Dynamic Currency Conversion. If a terminal asks "pay in USD or local currency?" — always choose local. DCC adds a hidden 3-7% markup.
- Carry some USD cash as backup. Even on islands with local currencies, USD works in emergencies.
- The Bahamian Dollar is pegged 1:1 to USD. You can use them interchangeably in the Bahamas.
Every island's currency info is on its destination profile page. You can also compare two islands to see their currencies, exchange rates, and USD acceptance side by side.
